Mandatory EPCS in Massachusetts

Prescribers in Massachusetts must electronically prescribe controlled substances as of January 1, 2021. The bill requiring it, An Act for Prevention and Access to Appropriate Care and Treatment of Addiction, was signed into law in August 2018 by Governor Baker. This bill initially established an effective date of January 1, 2020 but was later amended, delaying the effective date to January 1, 2021.

Massachusetts Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP)

Massachusetts General Laws Ch. 94C, Sec. 24A requires prescribers to check the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool (MassPAT) each time prior to issuing a prescription to a patient for a narcotic drug in Schedule II or III and prior to prescribing to a benzodiazepine to a patient for the first time.
