e-Prescribe in Texas

Electronic Prescribing of Non-Controlled and Controlled Substances (EPCS) is allowed in Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has allowed e-Sending Schedule II-V drugs since October 2013.

Effective September 1, 2016, a physician or practitioner in the state of Texas will no longer need to hold a Controlled Substances Registration (CSR) through the DPS.

There are a few state specific requirements for e-Prescribing in Texas:

DPS Number

For controlled substances, the Texas DPS requires the prescriber's current valid DPS registration number is included when electronically sending the prescription.

APNs

Advance practice nurses (APNs) who have prescriptive authority must include their prescriptive authority identification number on all prescriptions (non-controlled and controlled) written. For controlled substances, APNs must also include their Texas DPS registration number, their DEA number, and the DEA number and Texas DPS registration number of the supervising physician on all prescriptions.

Control Numbers

For Schedule II paper prescriptions written in the state of Texas, each prescription must be issued on DPS required paper that has a unique Control Number for prescription monitoring purposes. However, with e-Prescribing the control number is handled entirely by the pharmacy. This makes the process much quicker and easier for the prescriber.

Texas Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

The Texas PMP is a database of Schedule II, III, IV and V controlled substance prescriptions dispensed in Texas. Beginning March 1, 2020, prescribers will be required to check the patient’s PMP history before dispensing or prescribing opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or carisoprodol.

MDToolbox offers the ability to integrate with the Texas Controlled Substances PMP to streamline the process of checking the PMP during the prescribing workflow. Through the integration, prescribers can go directly to the patient's PMP report without having to log in to the PMP and search for the patient. Texas offers this integration for no additional fees. Contact us for more information or fill out the trial request form above to get started today.
